What is FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is a form provided by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). It can be completed by current and prospective college students (undergraduate and graduate) to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. This form is the first step in applying for most federal, state, and college financial assistance for students. Despite what the name may imply, it’s not just for federal student aid.

Almost every student may be eligible for some form of financial aid. Even students who don’t qualify for need-based aid may still be eligible for loans or scholarships. Once your FAFSA is completed, signed, and submitted, it will be processed, and your results will be sent directly to the schools you listed on the form and to your state agency. Apply early for the most financial aid options!

How to Fill Out the FAFSA Form

1
Gather your information – social security or alien registration number, federal income tax return, W-2 forms, and other income sources and investments. Your parents will be required to provide information if you are a dependent.
2
Create your FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID on the FAFSA website. You’ll use this to access resources and to electronically sign your FAFSA.
3
Complete the application. Be thorough and double-check it for accuracy.
4
Submit your FAFSA. You will receive an email when your FAFSA has been processed.

FAFSA Renewal

Since your financial circumstances may change, you must submit the FAFSA each year to remain eligible for financial aid. Most of your information, however, may carry over from the previous year’s FAFSA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my financial aid be used to cover books and other fees?

Yes, books and other necessary fees may be covered with your financial aid.

What happens if I must pause my education?

If you leave school, you enter a six-month grace period. During this time, you do not have to make payments on your federal student loans. Your interest builds up and is added to your principal balance at the end of your grace period. After six months, if you are still not back in school, your loan moves to a Student Repayment Plan.
