What is a Surgical Technologist?

Surgical technologists, also called scrub techs, are an integral part of the healthcare team, working under a surgeon’s supervision assisting in surgical operations. Prior to an operation, they help prepare the operating room, set up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and assemble and check surgical equipment. They ensure that the operating room is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

What are typical class hours for the Surgical Technology program?

Classes start at 6:00 AM and end at 11:00 AM. Breaks are scheduled after 50 minutes of instruction and last for 10 minutes.

My fascination with surgery and the intricacies surrounding it drove me to pursue Surgical Technology. The prospect of making a difference in people’s lives appealed to me, and when I learned about the program at Brookline, I knew it was the right choice for me.

Surgical Technology Curriculum (71.5 Credits)

The Surgical Technology program is designed to provide you with the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to fulfill your Scrub Tech duties in the operating room.

Brookline students receive quality medical instruction in a variety of healthcare topics including but not limited to the following: hospital organization, safety, legal issues, anatomy, physiology, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures. Upon graduation, students will have acquired the skills required for an entry-level position in the surgical tech field.

In order to graduate from the Surgical Technology program, students must take an examination by a nationally recognized and accredited credentialing agency.  The College assists students in taking this examination during the program’s Externship course. Students are not required to pass such an exam in order to graduate or obtain initial employment in the field.
